Of course all of the stuff that you need to build your own smart home or to make a dumb house smart are easily available. You can get the intelligent thermostats and cctv kits pretty easily, but the thing that I am curious about is how you bring it all together in a working system. Obviously that is the real key, you would in theory want to have a house that was able to monitor everything and keep it in an ideal range. If no one was at home, then you would want to have the house automatically decide what needed to be on and what did not need to be one. If no one is there, then the house does not need to be warm in the winter or cool in the summer. At the same time there needs to be a way to get it in a comfortable temperature range before you step through the front door.
The obvious way to do that is to have the house’s main brain know where you are and more specifically where you are going. It does not really matter if you are close or far away, but instead it matters if you are going to be returning immediately or in an hour or two. So the house needs to be able to track your movements, but at the same time it needs to understand what your intentions are. The bigger thing to me is security however. I have a dog, but he is not too scary. If someone broke in the house he might come up and lick their face instead of sounding the alarm. I want to have a smart security system, one that knows the difference between a herd of deer and an intruder in the back yard, that is not easy for a machine.
